Prompt:
Text sets, or thematic groups of readings, expose us to various perspectives (and thus build schema while allowing for the motivational role of choice in reading. After exploring this text set by previewing the texts, you will be invited to choose one text, along with another pre-selected text, to read in depth and discuss. As a course community, we will benefit from each others' intellectual work and have "breadcrumbs" to various intellectual resources to return to in the future.
Post two of your "golden lines"/strong lines to the discussion, along with at least one paragraph each about how these lines relate to the topic of identity and how they might (or might not) relate to your paper.
Ocean Vuong’s “A Letter to My Mother That She Will Never Read”
“I am writing because they told me to never start a sentence with because. But I wasn’t trying to make a sentence—I was trying to break free”
This line stood out to me because, in a weird way, I can relate to it. I am not sure if I’m maybe interpreting the message wrong, but I feel like I relate to it since I used this word a lot when trying to avoid home. The word because is used as an explanation for one’s reasoning. “Because” is a word I used a lot when I was around my mother since I was stuck living with her. I feel like maybe this is an aspect I could possibly incorporate into the paper do to the personal relationship I had with the word.
Jane Brody’s “What Twins Can Teach Us About Nature Vs. Nurture”
“Although they shared all their genes and grew up with the same adoring parents, clearly there were differences in these boys that had been influenced by other factors in their environment, both prenatal and postnatal”
This line stood out to me mainly because it demonstrates the idea that even if people, such as twin brothers, share the same genes or have a similar lifestyle, their identities will end up being different due to their experiences. Experiences essentially shape the character of individuals. Something interesting to note is that even when people witness the same phenomenon, they won’t process the event in the same way. Everyone cant witness the same perspective because we all have different mindsets, which changes one’s overall experience. I feel like I could use this idea for the paper because of its relatable. Although I don’t have a twin, me and my siblings are from the same parents and grew up in the same household. Even though we are from the same background we each had different experiences growing up, influencing us down different paths.
